VOLUNTEERS' REST

The idea for this project began in 2001 during the International Year of the Volunteer. CIVC, the City of St. Albert and community groups wanted something to commemorate the spirit of this special year and formed a partnership to develop the idea. A grant from the St. Albert Community Lottery Board provided the funds needed to make it happen.

Volunteers Rock - The rock itself was donated by Lafarge Canada Inc.

On September 14, 2002, the dedication of the Volunteer's Rest on the Red Willow Parkway took place to recognize the spirit of volunteers. It was attended by dignataries, community groups and individuals. There were speeches, a ribbon cutting, and cake for all to share. The site consists of a plaque on a specially chosen rock (good for climbing or sitting upon!), a bright red bench and a flowering Japanese lilac tree.

St. Albert Mayor Richard Plain, CIVC Board Chair Ruth Moellenbeck, and MLA Mary O'Neill prepare to cut the ribbons.

Leanne cuts and serves the cake with the help of CIVC Board Member Ray Sawchuk.

The staff and board members of CIVC gather around the bench while hard-working volunteer Millie Seitz takes a well-deserved rest!
